Synopsis

Aaliyah moves through a sparse, dreamlike world shaped by heartbreak. Inside a bare wooden house, she encounters a mirror that reveals glimpses of other locations, including a quiet forest where she sits alone on a bench. The reflective imagery mirrors the song's wounded uncertainty as she questions how the person she loved could betray her. The video builds toward an emotional outdoor performance in the rain, where Aaliyah delivers the ballad with restrained intensity and vulnerability.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video debuted on MTV during the week of September 14, 1997, shortly after the song's release as a single.

• It uses the single version of the song rather than the original album recording. The arrangement also preserves part of the first verse that was commonly edited out for radio play.

• "The One I Gave My Heart To" was written by Diane Warren, making it one of the more traditional pop ballads in Aaliyah's catalog. The song gave her a prominent showcase for her upper register and vocal control.

• The track was issued as a double A-side with "Hot Like Fire," pairing an emotionally direct ballad with one of the more rhythm-driven songs from One in a Million.

• The mirror, bare-room setting, forest imagery, and rain-soaked finale give the video a deliberately minimal style. Compared with Aaliyah's more choreography-focused videos, its emphasis is on mood and performance.

• The video became a regular presence on both MTV and BET in late 1997, helping the song reach No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
