Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 - August 25, 2001), known professionally as Aaliyah, was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model. Often called the "Princess of R&B," she became one of the most influential figures in contemporary R&B and pop during the 1990s. Her understated vocal style, precise choreography, fashion sense, and adventurous production helped shape the sound and visual language of urban music at the turn of the millennium.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Aaliyah was raised primarily in Detroit. She began performing at an early age, appearing on the television program Star Search and later singing in concert with Gladys Knight. Her early exposure to professional musicians and performers led to a recording contract with Blackground Records and Jive Records. In 1994, at the age of 15, she released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. Produced mainly by R. Kelly, the album introduced her as a poised young performer with a smooth, controlled voice. It produced the successful singles "Back & Forth" and "At Your Best (You Are Love)" and established Aaliyah as a major new presence in R&B.
Aaliyah's artistic identity developed more fully with her second album, One in a Million, released in 1996. The record paired her relaxed delivery with innovative production from Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and other leading figures in hip hop and R&B. Songs such as "If Your Girl Only Knew," "4 Page Letter," and "One in a Million" combined fractured rhythms, spacious arrangements, and a futuristic atmosphere. The album became a commercial success and marked an important shift in mainstream R&B, helping bring more experimental beat programming into popular music.
Her crossover profile expanded through soundtrack work. In 1997, she recorded "Journey to the Past" for the animated film Anastasia, earning an Academy Award nomination for the song's writers and performing the number at the ceremony. The following year, "Are You That Somebody?" from Dr. Dolittle became one of her signature recordings. Its distinctive beat, vocal phrasing, and unconventional production earned Aaliyah a Grammy nomination and demonstrated her growing ability to bridge R&B, pop, and hip hop.
Aaliyah made her film debut in Romeo Must Die (2000), an action film starring Jet Li. She played Trish O'Day and also served as an executive producer of the soundtrack. The single "Try Again," produced by Timbaland and Static Major, became her first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won two MTV Video Music Awards. She next appeared as the vampire queen Akasha in Queen of the Damned, which was released posthumously in 2002.
Her third studio album, Aaliyah, arrived in July 2001. Combining atmospheric R&B, electronic textures, and restrained performances, it included "We Need a Resolution," "More Than a Woman," and "Rock the Boat." The album reached number two on the Billboard 200 and is widely regarded as the most complete expression of her musical style.
On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight other people died in a plane crash shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas, following the filming of the "Rock the Boat" music video. She was 22. Later releases, including I Care 4 U and Ultimate Aaliyah, expanded her catalog with hits, rarities, and previously unreleased recordings. Despite a career lasting only a few years, Aaliyah's influence remains evident in contemporary R&B, pop, hip hop, music videos, and performance style.
