In a rain-soaked, futuristic-looking Los Angeles, Justin Timberlake watches a former lover arrive at her house with another man. After spying on the couple, he breaks in through a window and moves through the home with eerie, almost weightless choreography. He eventually finds a hidden video camera and records himself filming an intimate encounter with another woman. The tape is left behind as a final act of revenge, turning the breakup into a calculated message about betrayal, surveillance, and emotional payback.
Francis Lawrence directed the video, which was filmed in Malibu, California, on October 22, 2002. The clip premiered on MTV's TRL on November 25, 2002.
Lawrence developed the concept after Timberlake described the song as a "kiss-off" track and gave him permission to create the visual treatment. The director had previously tried to sell a similar idea to other artists who were reluctant to appear in an unflattering light.
The blonde woman, played by Lauren Hastings, was deliberately styled as a Britney Spears look-alike. Her newsboy cap, tinted glasses, and other visual details were designed to evoke Spears without explicitly naming her. The production reportedly avoided using the name "Britney" on set.
Timberlake's ex was never identified in the video, but the implied connection to Spears was unmistakable in the context of their highly publicized 2002 breakup. The song and video helped establish Timberlake's post-NSYNC image as darker, more confrontational, and less squeaky-clean.
The video's visual language borrows from psychological thrillers, with wet metallic interiors, voyeuristic camera work, stalking imagery, and the protagonist's unsettling calm. Contemporary critics compared Timberlake's look and movement to characters from The Matrix and American Psycho.
Timbaland appears in the video, reinforcing the creative partnership that shaped Timberlake's solo debut. He also produced the recording of "Cry Me a River," which appeared on Justified.
At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, the video won Best Male Video and Best Pop Video. It was also nominated for Video of the Year, Best Direction, and Viewer's Choice.

You were my sun You were my earth But you didn't know all the ways I loved you, no So you took a chance And made other plans But I bet you didn't think that they would come crashing down, no You don't have to say, what you did, I already know, I found out from him Now there's just no chance, for you and me, there'll never be And don't it make you sad about it You told me you loved me ... |
