Synopsis

Madonna plays Louise Oriole, a successful Manhattan executive whose polished professional life hides a destructive nightlife. She drinks heavily, smokes, and moves through a series of emotionally empty encounters with men. A mysterious guardian angel, played by Christopher Walken, observes her increasingly dangerous behavior and appears at key moments. After one final encounter turns violent, Louise is murdered. The video frames her death as both a grim consequence of her choices and a passage into an afterlife where the angel guides her away from the life she could not escape.

• Madonna's character is named Louise Oriole. Louise is Madonna's middle name, while Oriole is generally understood as a reference to Oriole Way, the Los Angeles street where she once lived with Sean Penn.
