Wiki

Biography

U2 are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976 by drummer Larry Mullen Jr., vocalist Bono, guitarist and keyboardist The Edge, and bassist Adam Clayton. The lineup has remained unchanged throughout the band's career, an unusual continuity that has helped U2 develop a distinct musical identity across five decades. The group began rehearsing at Mount Temple Comprehensive School under the name Feedback, later becoming The Hype before settling on U2.

Their first release was the 1979 EP Three, which established the band in Ireland and led to a recording contract with Island Records. U2's debut album, Boy (1980), introduced a tense, atmospheric form of post-punk built around The Edge's spacious guitar effects, Mullen's disciplined drumming, Clayton's melodic bass, and Bono's emotionally direct vocals. October followed in 1981, while War (1983) gave the band its first major international breakthrough. Driven by songs such as "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday," the album combined political urgency with a forceful, arena-ready sound.

The Unforgettable Fire (1984), produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, broadened U2's palette with ambient textures and more impressionistic arrangements. Their appearance at Live Aid in 1985 further expanded their audience, but it was The Joshua Tree (1987) that made U2 global superstars. The album's widescreen production and songs including "With or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and "Where the Streets Have No Name" turned the band into one of the defining acts of the decade. Its visual presentation, particularly the stark photography and large-scale concert staging, also strengthened U2's reputation as a band that treated music videos and live design as part of the same artistic language.

The double album and concert film Rattle and Hum (1988) documented the band's engagement with American blues, gospel, and roots music. After the intense touring cycle that followed, U2 deliberately changed direction. Achtung Baby (1991) introduced industrial rhythms, electronic production, distorted dance-rock, and a more ironic public image. The accompanying Zoo TV Tour transformed the arena concert into a multimedia spectacle, using video walls, satellite links, visual overload, and fictional alter egos. Zooropa (1993) continued this experimentation, while Pop (1997) and the PopMart Tour pushed the combination of rock, dance music, and technology even further.

U2 returned to a more direct, song-focused approach with All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000), which included "Beautiful Day," "Walk On," and "Elevation." How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2004) followed with a stronger guitar emphasis. Their subsequent work included No Line on the Horizon (2009), Songs of Innocence (2014), and Songs of Experience (2017). The surprise iTunes release of Songs of Innocence became a major talking point because of its automatic delivery to users, while its companion album explored memory, aging, political anxiety, and personal responsibility.

U2 have remained a major live attraction through productions such as the U2 360 Tour, the Joshua Tree anniversary tours, and the U2:UV Achtung Baby Live residency at Sphere in Las Vegas. Songs of Surrender (2023) presented reimagined versions of earlier songs. In 2026, the band continued releasing new material, including the singles "Street of Dreams" and "Fireflies," while promoting an upcoming studio album. Throughout their career, U2 have combined arena-scale ambition with political and humanitarian engagement, making them one of rock music's most influential and enduring bands.
