Synopsis

U2's video for "The Unforgettable Fire" moves through a dreamlike landscape of night-time city lights, flickering reflections and snowy wilderness. Bono watches the band perform on a small screen while glowing trails suggest movement through an unseen city. The imagery then shifts to The Edge walking through a snow-covered forest, intercut with mysterious carnival scenes and glimpses of the other band members. Rather than presenting a conventional narrative, the video mirrors the song's atmospheric, impressionistic mood.

Factoids & Trivia

• The snowy outdoor footage and carnival scenes were filmed in Sweden in January 1985, while U2 was in Stockholm for a concert at the Ice Stadium.

• Anton Corbijn accompanied the band during the Swedish shoot and also photographed U2 in the snow around the same period.

• The city footage at the beginning has never been definitively identified. It is often thought to be Minneapolis, although the material may have been stock footage.

• Two edits of the video circulate. The version commonly shown on MTV includes a brief appearance by a musician playing a stringed instrument, while the alternate edit replaces some of this material with additional shots of Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton.

• The MTV version was later used for U2's official remastered presentation on YouTube in 2021.

• The video was included in the 1985 VHS release The Unforgettable Fire Collection, alongside videos for "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "A Sort of Homecoming" and "Bad," as well as a documentary about the album's creation.

• The song and album title were inspired by The Unforgettable Fire, an exhibition about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The song itself treats that subject indirectly, favoring impressionistic images and travel-like fragments over a literal narrative.

• The single was released in April 1985 and became one of U2's two Top 10 UK singles from the album, alongside "Pride (In the Name of Love)."
