Synopsis
U2 perform amid the winding streets and vivid textures of Fez, Morocco, while a belly dancer moves through the city's markets and alleyways. The band's appearances are treated with playful distortion, colored filters, mirror-like effects, and rapidly shifting images that blur the line between documentary footage and fantasy. Bono dances and mugs for the camera as the group becomes part of an exuberant, dreamlike celebration of movement, sensuality, and the visual atmosphere of North Africa.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed over two days in October 1991 in Fez, Morocco. Much of the city footage was shot around the Tanners Quarter and the Suuq Dabbaghin.
- Its imagery was conceived as a deliberate departure from U2's familiar visual world, using another culture and location to create a place that feels suspended between reality and fantasy.
- The production was made for Bandits Productions, with Philippe Dupuis-Mendel serving as producer.
- The dancer is often identified as Morleigh Steinberg, but U2 reference material distinguishes the video performer from Steinberg. Steinberg later took over the belly-dancer role during the outdoor leg of the Zoo TV Tour.
- Christina Petro originated the live belly-dancer role during the indoor arena shows. Steinberg replaced her for the stadium dates, turning the song into one of Zoo TV's recurring theatrical set pieces.
- The video was later included in U2's home-video compilations, including The Best of 1990-2000 and Achtung Baby: The Videos, the Cameos, and a Whole Lot of Interference from Zoo TV.
