Synopsis

Axl Rose performs the song while remembering his wedding to Stephanie Seymour. The ceremony gives way to a lavish reception, where a sudden storm sends the guests running. The mood turns tragic as Seymour is later shown in a coffin, followed by a rain-soaked funeral. Slash appears alone outside a remote desert chapel for his guitar solo, while dreamlike flashes connect the wedding, the funeral and the song's themes of love, loss and regret. The unexplained circumstances of the bride's death leave the story deliberately open to interpretation.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was inspired by "Without You," a short story by Del James. The story also helped provide a narrative link between "November Rain" and Guns N' Roses' later video for "Don't Cry."

• With a reported budget of about $1.5 million, "November Rain" was regarded as the most expensive music video made at the time. Around $150,000 reportedly went toward the chapel used for Slash's desert solo.

• The outdoor chapel and surrounding set were filmed at Cerro Pelon Movie Ranch in New Mexico. The church had previously appeared in the western film "Silverado."

• The wedding scenes were filmed at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Los Angeles, while the reception was shot at Villa del Sol d'Oro in Sierra Madre. Performance footage came from the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

• Stephanie Seymour, Axl Rose's girlfriend at the time, plays the bride. Her presence made the video's fictional wedding especially memorable, even though the couple's real-life relationship later ended.

• The video intentionally avoids explaining how the bride dies. The mirror-like cover across part of her face in the coffin became one of its most discussed images.

• The nonlinear structure was influenced by Nicolas Roeg's film "Don't Look Now," particularly its use of grief, premonitions and fractured chronology.

• The production was notoriously difficult. Band members often arrived late or worked through the night, forcing the crew to accept visible inconsistencies between daylight and nighttime scenes.

• The man who throws himself into the wedding cake was long misidentified as MTV host Riki Rachtman. Rachtman appears at the reception, but later clarified that he was not the cake-diver.

• "November Rain" won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Cinematography in 1992.

• The video's extravagant scale, religious imagery and unanswered questions helped establish it as one of the defining rock videos of the early 1990s.
