Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1985 by musicians connected with Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. Led by vocalist Axl Rose, the group became one of the defining acts of late-1980s rock by combining the force of heavy metal with the rawness of punk, the swing of blues-based hard rock, and a strong sense of theatrical danger.
The band's classic lineup consisted of Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. After signing with Geffen Records, Guns N' Roses released its debut album, Appetite for Destruction, in July 1987. The record initially sold modestly, but the music videos for "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child o' Mine" helped turn it into a worldwide success. "Paradise City" completed a run of enduring singles, while the album's mix of aggression, melody, and street-level realism distinguished the band from the more polished glam metal acts that dominated American rock radio.
Appetite for Destruction eventually sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and became the best-selling debut album in United States history. Its impact extended beyond sales. Guns N' Roses brought a threatening, unruly image back to mainstream rock, while Rose's wide vocal range and Slash's blues-informed guitar work gave the band both volatility and musical identity. Their early reputation was reinforced by chaotic shows, internal tensions, and a willingness to address sex, addiction, violence, and alienation without softening the subject matter.
The 1988 release G N' R Lies combined the four-song Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide EP with newer acoustic material. Its best-known track, "Patience," revealed a more reflective side of the band, although controversy surrounding the song "One in a Million" also drew criticism for its offensive language and imagery.
Guns N' Roses expanded its sound and scale with the simultaneous 1991 albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. The records included hard rock staples such as "You Could Be Mine" and "Don't Cry," alongside the ambitious ballad "November Rain" and the orchestral "Civil War." The accompanying Use Your Illusion Tour became one of the largest and most eventful tours of its era. By then, however, the original lineup was beginning to fracture. Adler was replaced by Matt Sorum, keyboardist Dizzy Reed joined the group, and Stradlin departed during the tour.
The covers album The Spaghetti Incident? followed in 1993, but the band's creative direction became increasingly uncertain. Slash and other longtime members eventually left, and Rose continued under the Guns N' Roses name with a changing lineup. After years of delays and extensive recording sessions, Chinese Democracy appeared in 2008. It was shaped by industrial and electronic influences and represented a substantial departure from the stripped-down sound of the original band.
A major reconciliation took place in 2016, when Slash and McKagan returned for the Not in This Lifetime... Tour. The reunion restored much of the group's historic profile and became one of the highest-grossing concert tours in rock history. Guns N' Roses has remained an active touring band into the 2020s. As of 2026, its performing lineup centers on Rose, Slash, McKagan, Fortus, Reed, Melissa Reese, and drummer Isaac Carpenter. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, confirming its lasting influence on hard rock and popular music.
