Plot Summary

The video was filmed in the Kaun Valley, Kaunertal and Pitztal Glacier regions and on the Großglockner in Austria. It follows the band on a brutal ascent through the snow-covered Alps. When Till Lindemann falls and suffers a catastrophic leg injury, the others refuse to leave him behind. Around a fire, they treat his wounds and quietly prepare for the possibility of his death. The next day, they carry him toward the summit, where he finally sees the mountain panorama before dying. The solemn rescue mission turns the song's theme of emotional dependence into a stark story about loyalty, sacrifice, and loss.

The video was directed by Jörn Heitmann, who had previously worked with Rammstein on "Sonne", "Mutter", "Amerika", and "Ich Will".

Production ran from October 23rd to 25th 2004 and premiered on November 8th, 2004 on German television (MTV).

The commonly seen video runs longer than the album track. After the song appears to end, the band spends roughly a minute in near silence, treating Till's injury and preparing a metal memorial plate. That wordless passage is not part of the 4:31 album version.

Heitmann conceived the mountain climb as more than a literal survival story: the climbers function as a band whose members are bound together and unable to continue without one another. The video therefore gives a concrete, fatal interpretation to the song's "Without You."

The shoot was physically demanding enough to become part of the production story. Behind-the-scenes footage shows the band dealing with the practical problem of carrying Lindemann up the mountain; Flake Lorenz could not manage the task alone, so Christoph Schneider helped lift and transport him at high altitude.

Austrian alternative band Naked Lunch accused Rammstein of borrowing the concept from their "God" video, which also centered on a mountaineering ordeal. Rammstein's representatives rejected the allegation, and Naked Lunch ultimately did not pursue legal action because the basic idea of climbing a mountain was considered too general to establish plagiarism.
