Synopsis
U2 perform "Even Better Than the Real Thing" in a stark studio space while a group of lookalikes performs the same song in a Carnaby Street shop window. The band and their doubles repeatedly trade places as the video fractures into rapid edits, television fragments, newspaper images, arcade-game footage, celebrity appearances and flashes of text. The deliberately overloaded visuals mirror the song's playful attitude toward image, imitation and instant gratification, ending with the instruction "Watch More TV."
Factoids & Trivia
- Filming took place in London from February 11 to 14, 1992. The opening location was the Zoo clothing store on Carnaby Street, followed by Pinewood Studios, where the studio performance and rotating-camera effects were filmed.
- The lookalike group was assembled specifically for the video through a UK radio audition. The members used U2's instruments and wore clothing associated with the band's Zoo TV era.
- The lookalikes continued working together as a tribute act and later collaborated with U2 again during a Zoo TV global broadcast.
- A scene in which the doppelgangers perform in the shop window while the real band watches from outside was filmed but left unused.
- Dancers were also hired for the Pinewood shoot, but most of their footage was removed from the standard version. Some of it appears in the "Perfecto Mix" video.
- The video incorporates imagery connected to the Zoo TV aesthetic, including the Beatles, Prince, Elvis Presley, Johnny Rotten, Cicciolina, Jeff Koons and footage from the documentary "Trabantland."
- The camera's 360-degree rollover rig was designed and built specifically for the production. The effect helped the video win Best Group Video and Best Visual Effects at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
- The main version first aired on MTV during the week of June 10, 1992. Two additional promotional versions were later circulated, including a dance remix and a live-footage collage.
