Synopsis

Shot in stark black and white, the video follows a solitary man rowing across a still lake while a woman moves through a series of Catholic rituals and private, unsettling gestures. The imagery remains dreamlike rather than literal, connecting the water, religious objects, and isolated figures to the song's themes of memory, mental distress, longing, and a search for mercy. Its slow pace and grainy photography create an atmosphere of quiet dread and emotional suspension.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was shot in Nicaragua on a relatively low budget, giving its stark images an especially raw and documentary-like quality.

• Bill Pope handled the cinematography. He later became known for major features including *The Matrix* and *Spider-Man 2*.

• Peter Gabriel gave the production unusually complete creative freedom. He later said that "Mercy Street" was the only video in his catalog in which he had no creative input or collaboration.

• The song was inspired by the poetry of Anne Sexton, particularly her posthumous collection *45 Mercy Street*. Gabriel dedicated the piece to her.

• "Mercy Street" was not released as a single, yet it still received an official music video and was included on Gabriel's 1987 video compilation *CV*.

• Gabriel later singled out the video as one of his favorites, alongside "Sledgehammer," "Big Time," and "Zaar."
