Synopsis

Set at a lively party, the video presents Jasmine Guy as the center of attention in a playful romantic rivalry. As she competes with another woman for the interest of the same man, the tension turns into a dance-off, giving the clip a distinctly early-1990s R&B feel. Guy also performs with a group of dancers, projecting confidence and flirtatious energy. Another circulating version shifts the setting to a photo shoot and adds more choreographed dance sequences.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Try Me" was released on September 28, 1990, as the first single from Guy's self-titled debut album on Warner Bros. Records.
  • The song was written and produced by the R&B group Full Force, with additional backing vocals from Ex Girlfriend.
  • The single reached No. 14 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, making it one of Guy's three charting R&B singles.
  • The video received significant promotional attention because Guy was already widely known as Whitley Gilbert on the NBC sitcom *A Different World*. It premiered after an episode segment of the show.
  • Two versions of the video are known to circulate. One centers on the party and dance-off storyline, while another uses a photo shoot setting and places Guy among background dancers.
  • Guy later performed "Try Me" on *Soul Train* in an episode that aired on November 17, 1990.
  • The extended version of the song was also used as background music during the party scene in the *A Different World* episode "Good Help is So Hard to Fire."
