Synopsis

Dexter Holland descends into a suburban neighborhood and begins performing "Why Don't You Get a Job?" as a small street ensemble gradually forms around him. The group moves through a colorful series of Universal Studios backlot locations, picking up musicians, dancers, bystanders, and characters linked to the song's complaints about freeloading partners. The casual performance grows into an impromptu parade, mixing staged television-show chaos with broad comedy before ending in a deliberately explosive visual punchline.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed on the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood, using recognizable sets including Colonial Street and Courthouse Square.
  • Bob Eubanks appears as the host of the parody dating-show sequence. His presence plays on his long association with television game shows, especially "The Newlywed Game."
  • Chris "X-13" Higgins plays the unemployed boyfriend described in the song, while Carmit Bachar appears as his girlfriend. Bachar later became widely known as a member of the Pussycat Dolls.
  • Guy Cohen, the actor from the "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)" video, makes a brief appearance near the end, linking the two videos from the band's "Americana" period.
  • Music writers frequently noted the song's strong resemblance to the Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," particularly in its melodic and rhythmic approach.
  • The video was later included on The Offspring: Complete Music Video Collection, released in 2005.
