Synopsis

On a bleak, monochrome city street, Michael Jackson moves among five disconnected strangers: a man at a window, a woman in a cafe, a homeless man, a pigeon feeder and a boy watching baseball. While the surrounding world moves in dreamlike slow motion, Jackson walks and sings in real time. When a sudden storm sends everyone running for cover, the six strangers eventually step outside together, surrendering to the rain. The video closes on Jackson alone, soaked and emotionally exposed.

Factoids & Trivia

• Despite its title, the video was filmed in Los Angeles in July 1996 rather than Moscow. Its anonymous urban setting turns the song's Russian references into a broader portrait of loneliness and displacement.

• The video's six central figures reflect the song's recurring concern with isolation. Jackson is presented less as a spectacular pop star than as another lonely person moving through an indifferent city. A biographical reading connects this to his reported habit of walking alone at night and hoping to find someone to talk to.

• The extreme slow motion was used to separate Jackson from the rest of the world. He generally moves at normal speed while pedestrians, falling rain, flying birds, breaking glass and spilled coffee appear unnaturally delayed.

• The artificial rain sequence caused an unexpected set problem: according to a later production recollection, Jackson stamped so forcefully while singing that he damaged the imitation asphalt beneath him.
