Synopsis

Set inside a Hollywood studio, the video presents Madonna as a glamorous actress performing "Material Girl" in a lavish production modeled on Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. A wealthy producer becomes infatuated with her and tries to win her over with jewelry, furs, cash, and other extravagant gifts. When those offerings fail, he disguises himself as a poor man and approaches her with a simple bouquet of daisies, revealing that romance matters more than luxury.

• Madonna's central performance deliberately recreates Marilyn Monroe's famous pink-dress sequence from the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The tribute reflects Madonna's long-standing fascination with Monroe's screen persona and vulnerability.
