Synopsis
A hallucinatory visual journey unfolds in sync with Junkie XL's heavy electronic pulse and Timothy Leary's spoken-word guidance. Abstract imagery, shifting textures, distorted perspectives and rapidly changing colors create the sensation of consciousness breaking free from ordinary perception. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the video works as a psychedelic audiovisual trip, gradually dissolving the boundaries between the physical world and the mind. Leary's reflections provide the conceptual thread as the images move toward a state of sensory overload and ego dissolution.
Factoids & Trivia
- The track appears on *Synthesized*, Junkie XL's sixth studio album, released in November 2012 after a four-year gap between albums.
- Timothy Leary's contribution is a spoken-word excerpt from *The Psychedelic Experience*, the 1964 book associated with Leary, Ralph Metzner and Richard Alpert.
- Tom Holkenborg said the Leary material was suggested by an external A&R consultant who was helping him search for vocal samples. Holkenborg initially had to remind himself who Leary was, but found a section that fit the track perfectly.
- Holkenborg described "Leave Behind Your Ego" as the most electronic piece on *Synthesized*, although it still includes live drums and live bass.

- The production credits list Niles Howard as editor, Hermes Marco as director of photography and Andy Rafael Barrios for visual effects.
- The video's psychedelic approach matches the wider concept of *Synthesized*, whose track list also includes "Take Off On Molly's E," "Twilight Trippin'" and "The Art of Luxurious Intergalactic Time Travel."
