Wiki

Biography

Junkie XL is the principal artistic name of Dutch musician, producer, DJ and film composer Tom Holkenborg, who is also credited as JXL. Born on December 8, 1967, in Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands, Holkenborg developed as a multi-instrumentalist and producer before becoming one of the most recognizable electronic artists of the late 1990s and early 2000s. His work combines forceful programmed rhythms with rock instrumentation, synthesizers, sampling and detailed studio production.

Holkenborg began playing piano at the age of three, drums at eight, guitar at twelve and bass at fourteen. As a teenager, he became interested in the relationship between electronic technology and organic instruments. He later joined the Dutch new wave group Weekend at Waikiki, working as a multi-instrumentalist and producer while touring in Europe. In the early 1990s, he formed the industrial rock project Nerve with Phil Mills and also produced recordings for artists in the alternative, hardcore and metal scenes, including The Gathering, Sepultura, Fear Factory and Dog Eat Dog.

He launched Junkie XL as a solo project in the mid-1990s, releasing the debut album Saturday Teenage Kick in 1997. The record mixed electronic breakbeats, rock guitars and rap, with vocals from Patrick "Rude Boy" Tilon of Urban Dance Squad. The follow-up, Big Sounds of the Drags (1999), developed the project's aggressive, hybrid sound and helped establish Holkenborg within the international big beat and club music scenes.

His breakthrough came in 2002 with "A Little Less Conversation," a modernized version of Elvis Presley's 1968 song. Released under the name Elvis vs. JXL, the track originated in a Nike advertising campaign connected with the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It became an international number-one hit and introduced Holkenborg's production style to a much wider audience. The song was included on Radio JXL: A Broadcast from the Computer Hell Cabin (2003), an ambitious album featuring guest appearances from artists including Robert Smith, Gary Numan and Chuck D. Later albums included Today (2006), Booming Back at You (2008) and Synthesized (2012). He also became known for remixes of recordings by artists such as Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

Holkenborg had already contributed music to films, television and video games, but composing for cinema became his primary focus during the 2010s. He worked with Hans Zimmer and the Remote Control Productions team on projects including The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. His solo score for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) became a defining work, using pounding percussion, electronics and orchestral writing to intensify George Miller's kinetic action film. He subsequently scored Deadpool (2016), Tomb Raider (2018), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021), Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).

As a composer, Holkenborg is noted for treating sound design, synthesis, orchestration and recording as parts of one continuous process. His career has therefore connected the worlds of electronic dance music, advertising, video games and large-scale film scoring, with Junkie XL remaining the name most closely associated with his formative recording career.
