Synopsis

A crowd gathers outside a record store and rushes inside when the doors open. The customers scramble for CDs, eventually revealing that every available copy is Falco's "Egoist." Shoppers listen to the single, sing along, flirt through listening booths, and dance around the store while Falco appears on posters, screens, and a life-size cardboard cutout. Concert footage is intercut with the retail frenzy, creating a playful world in which the singer and his song dominate everything.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was released after Falco's death on February 6, 1998. "Egoist" became the fourth single from his posthumous album "Out of the Dark (Into the Light)," issued in August 1998.

• The clip was produced by DoRo/Department M. Its production credits include Chris Valentin as director of photography and Sven Budelmann as editor.

• Falco had reportedly considered making the video a tribute to Jean-Paul Goude's 1990 Chanel "Egoiste" commercial. That proposed concept would have featured women shouting from the balconies of a classical hotel, but it was not realized.

• The concert inserts come from Falco's 1997 performance in the Dominican Republic, where he performed the song before its official release.

• The single reached No. 4 in Germany, No. 6 in Austria, and No. 19 in Switzerland.

• The record-store setting turns the song's central idea into a visual joke: the entire marketplace is devoted to one artist, with Falco's image and music appearing everywhere.
