Synopsis

Sleeper perform "Inbetweener" while roaming the aisles of a brightly lit supermarket, turning an ordinary shopping trip into a colorful pop spectacle. Louise Wener and the band play among shelves, products, and promotional displays, with the setting matching the song's focus on suburban routines and unfulfilled ambitions. Television presenter Dale Winton appears in a comic cameo, peering over the shelves and treating tubes of Pringles as makeshift percussion instruments. The result is playful, distinctly British, and closely tied to mid-1990s supermarket culture.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Dale Winton was invited because Sleeper were fans of his daytime show "Supermarket Sweep." Louise Wener later recalled that he was energetic, funny, and happy to join in throughout the long video shoot.
  • Wener holds up Sleeper-branded soap powder during the video, while Winton uses Pringles containers as percussion.
  • "Inbetweener" was Sleeper's breakthrough single. Released in January 1995, it reached number 16 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • Wener described the song as being about life in an English commuter town, including suburban routines and unfulfilled dreams. The supermarket setting reinforces that everyday, consumer-driven environment.
  • A separate version was filmed for the North American market after Arista backed another shoot. The original UK video remains the version most strongly associated with Dale Winton.
  • The single's demand reportedly exceeded the record label's initial pressing. Sleeper's sales were held back when stores could not be restocked quickly enough, despite stronger midweek indications.
