Synopsis

Natalie Imbruglia walks through the streets of Barcelona, seemingly detached from the commotion unfolding around her. A man carrying flowers follows close behind, but his pursuit is repeatedly disrupted by accidents, falling objects, street fights, and other obstacles. While he becomes increasingly tangled in the chaos, Imbruglia continues calmly on her way, singing as the camera tracks alongside her. In the closing moments, she escapes in the back of a stranger's red pickup truck, leaving her would-be pursuer behind.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed on location in Barcelona, Spain, using the city's streets as an active part of the choreography.
  • The camera maintains a continuous left-to-right movement throughout the clip. The finished video was assembled from sections of one extended tracking move.
  • The production was completed in a single day, according to Alison Maclean's account of the shoot.
  • The pursuit is disrupted by carefully staged physical comedy, including objects falling on the man and a fight breaking out around him.
  • The visual concept was inspired by the celebrated traffic-jam sequence in Jean-Luc Godard's 1967 film "Week End."
  • "Big Mistake" was released as the second single from Imbruglia's debut album "Left of the Middle" in 1998. It reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, matching the peak of "Torn."

Lyrics

There's no sign on the gate
And there's mud on your face
Don't you think it's time we re-investigate this situation
Put some fruit on your plate

You forgotten how it started
Close your eyes
Think of all the bubbles of love we made
And you're down on your knees
It's too late
Oh don't come crawlin'
And you lie by my feet
What a big mistake
