Natalie Jane Imbruglia (born February 4, 1975) is an Australian-British singer, songwriter and actress. She first became known as an actress on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, but built her international reputation as a recording artist with the 1997 single "Torn". The song became one of the defining pop-rock hits of the 1990s and established Imbruglia as a major international performer.
Born in Sydney and raised on the New South Wales Central Coast, Imbruglia trained in dance and began appearing in television commercials as a teenager. In 1992, she joined the cast of Neighbours, playing Beth Brennan. Her two-year run on the series gave her public visibility in Australia and the United Kingdom, while also providing a platform for her later move into music. After leaving the show, she relocated to London and began developing a career as a singer and songwriter.
Imbruglia signed a recording contract with RCA and released her debut album, Left of the Middle, in 1997. Its lead single, "Torn", was a polished interpretation of a song originally written by Anne Previn, Scott Cutler and Phil Thornalley and first recorded by the band Ednaswap. Imbruglia's version combined an emotionally exposed vocal with an accessible alternative-pop arrangement. The song topped charts in several countries and became a major radio success in the United States. Other singles from the album, including "Big Mistake", "Wishing I Was There" and "Smoke", helped sustain its success. Left of the Middle sold millions of copies worldwide and earned Imbruglia major awards, including a BRIT Award for Best International Breakthrough Act and an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song.
Her second album, White Lilies Island, followed in 2001. It moved away from the immediate impact of "Torn" while retaining the melodic and introspective qualities of her debut. The album produced the singles "That Day", "Wrong Impression" and "Beauty on the Fire". Imbruglia returned in 2005 with Counting Down the Days, which included "Shiver", a prominent British hit and one of her most successful singles after "Torn". The album reached number one in the United Kingdom.
In 2009, Imbruglia released Come to Life, an album shaped by collaborations with contemporary pop and rock writers. Although its reception and commercial performance were more modest, it continued her interest in combining personal lyrics with modern pop production. She later explored a different approach on Male (2015), a collection of songs written by male singer-songwriters, including material associated with artists such as Cat Stevens, Tom Petty and Damien Rice.
After a period away from recording, Imbruglia returned to original material with Firebird in 2021. The album included the singles "Build It Better", "Maybe It's Great" and "On My Way", and presented a more contemporary version of her pop sound without abandoning her characteristically direct vocal style. She also performed on television and continued to revisit her best-known material, including "Torn".
Imbruglia has maintained an acting career alongside music. Her film work includes the comedy Johnny English (2003), in which she played Lorna Campbell opposite Rowan Atkinson, as well as appearances in Go, Closed for Winter and Among Ravens. Her music videos, especially the widely recognized video for "Torn", have also been an important part of her public image.
As of September 1, 2026, Imbruglia is preparing to release Algorithm, scheduled for September 4, 2026. The album marks her first new studio collection since Firebird and introduces a more electronic, dance-oriented direction. Its advance singles include "Upside Down", "Algorithm" and "Just Drive". Across her career, Imbruglia has remained associated with emotionally candid pop, a distinctive light vocal tone and the rare ability to turn an understated performance into a lasting international hit.
