Synopsis

Natalie Imbruglia performs inside what appears to be a modest apartment while singing about the collapse of a relationship. Her apparent conversation with a boyfriend gradually reveals itself as staged footage, with the actors fumbling lines and a crew repeatedly interrupting to adjust the scene. As the song reaches its climax, the apartment begins to wobble and the set is dismantled around her. Left standing amid the wreckage, Imbruglia dances and continues singing as the illusion of domestic stability literally falls apart.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed on October 25, 1997, shortly before "Torn" became Imbruglia's international breakthrough.
  • Its central visual device is a locked-off camera. The viewpoint barely changes, making the apartment resemble a conventional relationship scene while the activity inside the frame gradually exposes the artificiality of the production.
  • British actor Jeremy Sheffield plays Imbruglia's on-screen boyfriend. The supposedly intimate exchange between them is repeatedly disrupted by visible staging, including line problems and repositioning.
  • The collapsing apartment is not a real room but a soundstage set. Crew members eventually remove the walls and furnishings, turning the video's production process into its final dramatic reveal.
  • The concept gives the song's emotional theme a visual metaphor: the relationship is presented as an illusion that cannot be made real, so the constructed world has to be taken apart.
  • "Torn" was Imbruglia's music video debut. Its deliberately self-conscious style helped distinguish her from the more straightforward performance videos common on late-1990s pop television.
  • Imbruglia's recording is a cover of a song written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven, and Phil Thornalley. Earlier versions had been recorded by other artists, including Ednaswap and Trine Rein.
  • The video is closely associated with the song's enormous 1997-98 success and remains one of the defining visual documents of the late-1990s pop era.

Lyrics

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm
He came around like he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
Well you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know
Seem to care what your heart is for
But I don't know him anymore
There's nothing where he used to lie
The conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's fine I'm torn
