Synopsis
Left alone in a dark rehearsal studio after the rest of the company has gone, Kate Bush lights a candle and performs "And So Is Love" in an atmosphere of growing unease. During the song, a blackbird enters the room and struggles to escape. After striking a window, the bird falls onto the sheet music. Bush gathers it gently, holds it close, and kisses it, turning the performance into a melancholy meditation on love, vulnerability, loss, and mortality.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video is drawn from Kate Bush's 1993 musical short film *The Line, the Cross and the Curve*, which combines songs from *The Red Shoes* with a surreal backstage fantasy.
- The blackbird sequence became the video's most memorable image. The bird's death gives the song's reflections on love a stark visual counterpart, while the candlelit setting emphasizes its intimate, mournful mood.
- "And So Is Love" was the fourth and final single released from *The Red Shoes*. It reached number 26 on the UK Singles Chart.
- Eric Clapton plays guitar on the recording, adding a restrained blues character to Bush's otherwise atmospheric arrangement.
- The single marked Bush's first appearance on *Top of the Pops* in nine years.
- It was the last new Kate Bush single before "King of the Mountain" in 2005, making the video an inadvertent closing statement for the long period between her releases.
