Synopsis

The video presents The Dream Academy performing "Life in a Northern Town" amid images of working-class northern life. The band appears onstage while documentary-style footage moves through streets, transport, industrial landscapes, local residents, and everyday scenes in Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester, and Pennsylvania. The contrast between the reflective performance and the observational city imagery gives the song a broad, nostalgic feeling, connecting its memories of winter, industry, community, and cultural change across Britain and the United States.

Factoids & Trivia

  • Two different videos were made for the song. The earlier version was filmed in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, in 1984. The later version, released in November 1985, became the more widely recognized clip.
  • The second video combines performance footage with location material from Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester, and Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. The American images help broaden the song's idea of a northern town beyond one specific British setting.
  • The first Hebden Bridge shoot took place in extremely cold, windy weather. Kate St John later recalled having to dance and gesture against what she described as a Siberian gale.
  • St John also remembered that the original video's concept included her and Nick Laird-Clowes as a working-class couple, with Laird-Clowes playing a pigeon fancier. She considered the idea ill-suited to the band and was much happier with the Newcastle-centered version.
  • The song was inspired in part by Laird-Clowes' visit to Newcastle and his observations of unemployment, empty shipyards, and the decline of northern industry. The video therefore works less as a literal narrative than as a visual record of the social landscape behind the lyrics.
  • Although the song was dedicated to Nick Drake, Laird-Clowes has said it was not specifically about Drake. The connection came through the guitar used to write the song, which had belonged to Drake and appeared on the cover of "Bryter Layter."
  • The Dream Academy's unusual mix of drum machine, cor anglais, string textures, timpani, and chant-like backing vocals helped the video stand apart from more conventional mid-1980s pop promos.

Lyrics

"All out" cried the boy
And put the girl in danger
Whose only weapon was to believe in love
"All out" but don't say forever
Too late for re-arrangement
He's already thinking of another face
And she's drawing on the memory she can't erase

They're moving on
Keep a moving it yeah
They're moving on
We'll make it this time
I know we're gonna make it this time
