Synopsis

Guano Apes perform "Open Your Eyes" in an otherwise deserted hotel lobby, turning the polished public space into an unlikely rock stage. While the band delivers the song with aggressive energy, the staff remain bored and detached, carrying on with their routine as if nothing unusual is happening. One employee even vacuums around the musicians. The deadpan reactions contrast with the band's intensity, creating a simple visual metaphor for indifference and people failing to notice what is happening directly in front of them.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Open Your Eyes" was released in 1997 as the Guano Apes' debut single and became one of the defining songs from their first album, "Proud Like a God."
  • The song helped the band win VIVA's "Local Heroes" competition, where they competed against more than 1,000 other acts. Heavy rotation of the video on VIVA brought the group to wider attention and helped lead to their record deal with GUN Records.
  • The single reached No. 5 on the German singles chart and remained in the German Top 100 for 30 weeks.
  • In Germany, the single was certified gold in 1999.
  • The video's deliberately static setting and indifferent hotel employees play against the song's confrontational title. Instead of illustrating the lyrics literally, the clip presents a band demanding attention while the surrounding world refuses to react.

Lyrics

Hide your face forever
dream and search forever

Have you ever been for sale ?
when your isms get smart
oh so selfish and mindless
with that comment in your eye

Do you think that you are hard ?
really harder than the other
man you're acting cold
if you are not in charge
