Synopsis

TLC enter a meditation hut, where a probe camera observes several people struggling with beauty standards, insecurity, harassment and violence. Chilli plays a woman pressured by her boyfriend to consider breast implants, while a plus-size teenager battles bulimia and unrealistic images of female beauty. T-Boz portrays a student bullied by male classmates, and Left Eye witnesses a gang shooting before helping an injured victim. The stories are intercut with TLC performing in a vivid field of pink and purple flowers, reinforcing the song's message of self-acceptance.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in June 1999 in Valencia, California, and reportedly had a production budget of more than $1.6 million.

• A shorter "Children's Version" was created for all-ages television. It removes T-Boz's and Left Eye's separate storylines because some scenes were considered too explicit.

• The hospital sequence features singer Jade Villalon as a patient undergoing breast-implant removal. Actress Tamika Katon-Donegal plays the teenager struggling with body image and bulimia.

• Left Eye uses American Sign Language during portions of the performance scenes, adding a visual interpretation of the song's lyrics.

• The song began as a poem written by T-Boz after she watched an episode of "Ricki Lake" in which women were insulted over their appearance. Dallas Austin later helped turn the poem into the finished song.

• The full-length version is less frequently shown than the edited version because it includes graphic cosmetic-surgery imagery, bullying and a violent gang confrontation.
