Synopsis

The Verve travel through a bleak, rural landscape in a battered Dodge Charger, moving between deserted industrial spaces, open roads, and a grim roadside cafe. Richard Ashcroft and the band appear in a mix of color and black-and-white footage, their weary presence matching the song's hypnotic, druggy intensity. The journey feels less like a conventional narrative than a drifting road movie, with the Charger carrying them through a dislocated world before disappearing into the distance.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Gravity Grave" was released as a single in the United Kingdom on October 5, 1992, and was also included on the band's debut EP, *Verve*.
  • The video was filmed in and around Hartlepool, using locations that included the horseshoe tunnel at Steetley. Some of the surrounding industrial areas have since been redeveloped.
  • The car featured in the video is a 1973 Dodge Charger. It was not a pristine classic: contemporary descriptions note damaged bodywork, filler around the rear wheel arch, and a rough hand-painted appearance.
  • The Charger was registered in the United Kingdom in 1978 and had last been taxed in 1990, before appearing in the video two years later.
  • The car survived for more than two decades after filming but was eventually destroyed at the Heinegone banger race in King's Lynn on June 13, 2015.
  • The single was issued in both an edited version running about four and a half minutes and an extended version lasting more than eight minutes, reflecting the difference between the concise video format and the band's expansive early sound.
  • The combination of derelict locations, unstable color shifts, and the battered American car helped establish the raw, psychedelic identity of The Verve's pre-*Urban Hymns* period.
