Synopsis

Oasis perform "Wonderwall" inside a stark warehouse transformed into a surreal vaudeville stage. The monochrome setting is interrupted by flashes of color, while circus performers, a cello player, a saw player, a showgirl, and a vintage record player drift through the frame. Liam Gallagher sings directly to camera as the band pose, mime, and stare with deadpan intensity. The deliberately old-fashioned imagery gives the video a dreamlike, Beatles-inspired atmosphere that matches the song's wistful mood.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed on September 30, 1995, at Unit 217B in Woolwich, London.

• The original brief was simply to make the video black and white with "bits of colour." The colored details, including Noel Gallagher's guitar, were created by placing green-screen paper on objects during filming and isolating the color later.

• The video's visual style was partly inspired by the Beatles. The grid of band portraits recalls the promotional photography associated with *A Hard Day's Night*, while the vintage record player and heavy vignetting evoke 1960s home-movie footage.

• The director later said that the imagery was not carefully mapped to the lyrics. The cello player came from a magazine image, the showgirl was inspired by a still from *Help!*, and the clowns were added simply as another visual element.

• The shoot was reportedly chaotic. The band arrived late, the crew became distracted by their phones, two clowns got into a fight after both had been told they would be the only clown on set, and Liam and Noel Gallagher argued.

• Bassist Guigsy was temporarily absent from the band because of nervous exhaustion during the shoot. Scott McLeod appears in his place in the video.

• The video won British Video of the Year at the 1996 Brit Awards and was also nominated for Best International Video at the 1996 MuchMusic Video Awards.

• The black-and-white footage was shot on film, while the flashes appearing in the edit were created in-camera by switching the camera off and on during takes. The resulting exposure changes produced the bright white bursts.
