Synopsis

Seen entirely from a first-person viewpoint, the video follows an apparently male protagonist through a chaotic night in London. After taking drugs and drinking heavily, the character behaves violently and recklessly in clubs, on the street, and behind the wheel, eventually taking a stripper home. The camera captures the night as a disorienting rush of aggression, lust, and intoxication. Only at the end, when the protagonist is reflected in a mirror, does the video reveal that the person behind the rampage is a woman.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The entire video was shot in a single day in London. Several club sequences were filmed at the Base Club in the West End.
  • The point-of-view technique was particularly demanding for a 1997 production. A large 35mm camera was strapped to cinematographer Henrik Halvarsson's head so that the audience could experience the protagonist's movements directly.
  • None of The Prodigy's members appear in the video. The central character was played by model Teresa May, whose face remains hidden until the closing reveal.
  • The production team had to work around concerns from its backers after the storyboards showed the video's intended combination of sex, violence, and blood. The finished piece was deliberately designed to be outrageous, with a darkly comic twist.
  • MTV first limited the video to late-night programming in the United States, then removed it from regular rotation in December 1997. The unedited version became a frequently cited example of controversial music-video censorship.
  • Despite the backlash, the video received four nominations at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards and won Best Dance Video and Breakthrough Video.
  • A censored version removed or obscured much of the drug use, nudity, violence, and sexual content. This led to several different edits circulating on television and home video.
