Synopsis

Alanis Morissette leaves her apartment and wanders through a surreal New York City landscape, moving from one bizarre situation to another. She crosses a street and triggers a multi-car accident, walks across the stranded vehicles, arrives at a basketball court on horseback, performs acrobatics, kisses a stranger, jumps from a bridge, and joins a chaotic pie fight. The journey ends in a boxing ring, where she is knocked down by a female opponent before getting back up and leaving the gym.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The original video was filmed in New York City's Meatpacking District during a 23-hour shoot in weather reported to be around 10 degrees.
  • Morissette does not sing to the camera at any point in the original clip. The video instead turns the song's message about learning through experience into a series of escalating physical challenges.
  • The Twin Towers can be seen in the background during the tumbling sequence, giving the video an unintentional historical snapshot of New York before September 11, 2001.
  • Taylor Hawkins appears among the participants in the pie fight. He was Morissette's touring drummer during the Jagged Little Pill era.
  • Two videos were made for the single. Alongside the narrative version, a second clip uses live performance footage, including material associated with MTV Unplugged, and features a live version of the song.
  • The song's line about swallowing a "jagged little pill" provided the title for Morissette's breakthrough album.
