Alanis Nadine Morissette (born June 1, 1974) is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, and actress. Known for her forceful mezzo-soprano voice and emotionally direct writing, she became one of the defining artists of the 1990s alternative rock movement. Her songs often combine confessional detail with anger, vulnerability, irony, and spiritual questioning, helping bring an unusually candid female perspective into mainstream rock and pop.
Morissette began performing professionally in Canada as a teenager. Her first two albums, Alanis (1991) and Now Is the Time (1992), presented her as a dance-pop artist and were released primarily in her home country. Although these records did not predict the sound of her later work, they gave her early experience as a vocalist and performer. After moving to Los Angeles, she began writing with producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, a partnership that transformed her musical direction.
The result was Jagged Little Pill (1995), her international breakthrough and the central work of her career. Its single "Thank U" became one of her best-known songs, while "Uninvited," recorded for the film City of Angels, earned two Grammy Awards. On Under Rug Swept (2002), Morissette assumed a larger role in the recording process and served as the album's sole producer, emphasizing her development as a creator beyond the role of performer.
Her subsequent albums continued to shift between rock, pop, electronic textures, and introspective songwriting. They include So-Called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Entanglement (2008), Havoc and Bright Lights (2012), Such Pretty Forks in the Road (2020), and the ambient, meditation-oriented The Storm Before the Calm (2022).
