Synopsis

Sade performs with her band in a stylish nightclub while a charismatic operator moves through the city's nightlife, conducting shady deals and charming everyone around him. Played by Michael Feast, the suave but dangerous figure balances romance, crime, and betrayal, including an affair with a waitress portrayed by Amanda Pays. The standard video ends on his evasive, elusive image, while the extended version develops the story into a crime thriller involving Sade, the police, a rooftop chase, and a fatal attempt to escape.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 1984 alongside Sade's debut album, "Diamond Life," and helped establish the band's sophisticated visual identity.
  • Michael Feast plays the title character, while Amanda Pays appears as the waitress with whom he betrays Sade.
  • The extended version runs for roughly eight and a half minutes, compared with the approximately four-minute television edit.
  • The longer cut incorporates "Red Eye," the instrumental track that appeared with "Smooth Operator" on the 12-inch release.
  • In the extended storyline, the operator is presented as more than a faithless lover: he is linked to criminal dealings, surveillance, gunplay, and an attempted escape across the rooftops.
  • The video was among the works that helped turn "Smooth Operator" into one of Sade's signature songs and an enduring example of the polished, nocturnal style associated with the band's early recordings.
