Synopsis
Duran Duran perform "Rio" amid the sun, sea and beaches of Antigua. The band sail aboard a classic yacht, play on deck and ashore, and encounter colorful locals and a mysterious woman who appears to embody the song's glamorous fantasy. Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor are presented less as a conventional performance act than as stylish adventurers in an exotic, dreamlike setting. The result is a vivid celebration of escapism, fashion and early-1980s pop excess.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video was filmed in Antigua in 1982, including scenes aboard the classic yacht Eilean. The boat became one of the clip's most recognizable visual elements.
- The Antigua shoot also produced footage for "(Waiting for the) Nightboat," filmed at Nelson's Dockyard. The two productions were part of the band's larger plan to create ambitious, location-based promotional films for the *Rio* era.
- The production was notably spontaneous. According to production trivia reported by IMDb, the crew worked without a fixed storyboard, adapting the shoot to the scenery and opportunities they encountered. Some people seen in the video were approached locally and invited to take part.
- "Rio" helped establish Duran Duran's image as a band whose visual presentation matched the scale and glamour of its music. Its exotic locations and polished film look were especially valuable during MTV's early expansion, when the band's videos received heavy exposure in the United States.
- The yacht Eilean was later reunited with members of Duran Duran during Antigua's Classic Yacht Regatta, bringing one of the video's central props back into the band's orbit decades after filming.
