Synopsis
Zero 7's "Futures" is an abstract animation built from richly textured, organic forms. Shapes appear to grow, fold, dissolve, and transform into unfamiliar landscapes, creating the impression of a living visual ecosystem. Rather than following a conventional storyline or featuring the performers, the video develops through continuous metamorphosis, with each image flowing into the next. The hypnotic imagery mirrors the song's reflective mood and its meditation on uncertainty, movement, and what may come after a fall.
Factoids & Trivia
- "Futures" features Swedish-Argentine singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez and appears on Zero 7's 2006 album, "The Garden."
- Two distinct video versions are associated with the song: a first version identified with DuckEye and an alternate abstract version associated with the German visual artist Robert Seidel.
- The abstract version was made as a four-minute German production in 2006 and was later included in the International Film Festival Rotterdam's 2008 "Science and Beauty" program.
- The animation was noted for making computer-generated imagery look organic rather than mechanical. Its forms seem to grow and change continuously, blurring the line between digital animation, morphing, time-lapse photography, and simulated natural processes.
- The video contains no dialogue and depends entirely on the interaction between the evolving imagery and Gonzalez's restrained vocal performance.
- Its festival presentation treated the work as more than a conventional promotional clip, placing it alongside short films concerned with scientific processes and visual beauty.
