Wiki

Biography

Zero 7 is an English electronic music duo formed in London in 1997 by Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. Their music combines downtempo production with elements of trip-hop, acid jazz, soul, funk, ambient pop and electronica. Although the project is centered on the two producers, its identity has also been shaped by a rotating cast of vocalists and instrumental collaborators, including Sia, Sophie Barker, Mozez, Jose Gonzalez, Eska Mtungwazi, Tina Dico, Jem Cooke and Lou Stone.

Binns and Hardaker began their professional careers as studio engineers during the 1990s. Their early work placed them behind the scenes on recordings by artists including the Pet Shop Boys and Robert Plant. In 1997, they adopted the name Zero 7 after creating a remix of Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls." The track introduced their preference for spacious arrangements, softened rhythms and carefully layered studio textures. They subsequently produced remixes for artists such as Terry Callier, Lenny Kravitz and Sneaker Pimps, while developing their own material.

Zero 7's first releases were the limited-edition EP and EP 2, issued around 2000. Their debut album, Simple Things, followed in 2001. The record established the duo's characteristic balance between electronic programming and organic performance, moving from hushed instrumental passages to warm soul songs and understated vocal arrangements. Sia and Sophie Barker were among the most prominent contributors, with Sia appearing on "Destiny" and Barker singing on "In the Waiting Line." The album received a Mercury Prize nomination and became a defining release of the early-2000s downtempo scene.

"In the Waiting Line" also became one of Zero 7's most recognizable songs. Its use in the film Garden State and on the movie's influential soundtrack introduced the duo to a wider audience, while its animated music video, directed by Tommy Pallotta, gained attention for its early use of machinima techniques. The song's restrained pulse and reflective vocal performance became closely associated with the era's film, television and advertising culture.

Zero 7 followed Simple Things with When It Falls in 2004. The album reached the UK Top Five and expanded the group's palette through a more varied combination of acoustic instruments, electronic rhythm tracks and guest voices. Tracks such as "Home," "Warm Sound" and "Somersault" showed the duo moving toward a more song-oriented approach without abandoning their quiet, meticulously produced atmosphere.

The Garden, released in 2006, continued that development and included further work with Sia as well as a collaboration with Jose Gonzalez. The album reached number four in the UK and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. In 2009, Yeah Ghost brought a stronger emphasis on pop and alternative songcraft, with Eska Mtungwazi contributing prominently to its vocals. While critically well received, it marked a change in the group's commercial trajectory.

After the compilation Record in 2010, Zero 7 concentrated less on conventional album cycles and more on singles, remixes and EPs issued through their own Make Records imprint. Releases such as Simple Science, EP3 and the 2020 Shadows EP demonstrated their continuing interest in collaboration and gradual stylistic refinement. In 2024, they worked with Swim Surreal on In the Half Light, a full-length set that extended Zero 7's established language of mellow grooves, atmospheric electronics and intimate vocals. Across its career, the duo has remained known for subtle production, musical patience and a distinctive ability to make electronic music feel warm, human and cinematic.
