Synopsis

A group of people in Jamaica celebrates after discovering a freestanding door that appears to lead somewhere beyond their world. A man lip-syncs the opening verse before he and a woman carry the door into an open field. When the portal activates, a thrown rock causes its interior to fracture into vividly colored shards. The man runs through first and vanishes, leaving behind the warning "DON'T FOLLOW ME." The woman never notices it and follows him into the unknown.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released on May 9, 2008, ahead of "Going On" becoming a single from Gnarls Barkley's second album, The Odd Couple.
  • Neither CeeLo Green nor Danger Mouse appears in the video. Instead, one of the characters performs the song's first verse through lip-synching.
  • The production was filmed in Jamaica, using the country's landscape as the setting for a surreal science-fiction story about escaping ordinary reality.
  • The video's visual concept was noted for its resemblance to photographer Clayton James Cubitt's fashion series "Lagos Calling." The similarity prompted discussion about whether the photographer's style had been appropriated.
  • In 2011, Time included "Going On" in its list of the 30 greatest music videos of all time.
  • The portal's fractured, multicolored effect gives the climax a deliberately handmade, low-fi science-fiction feel rather than presenting the doorway as a conventional digital visual effect.
