Synopsis

A driver sets off in an old convertible and crosses the United States, with the journey compressed into a mesmerizing stream of time-lapse images. Seen from inside the car, highways, city streets, traffic, gas stations, and changing landscapes rush past in fluid bursts of motion. Headlights stretch into glowing lines while the scenery seems to transform around the vehicle. The simple road trip gradually becomes a hypnotic visual study of distance, speed, and the passage of time.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video is generally dated to 2003 and runs for approximately four minutes.
  • The journey is presented as a cross-country drive from Los Angeles to New York City.
  • Much of the video's distinctive look comes from time-lapse photography rather than conventional sped-up footage. The technique turns passing headlights, road markings, and urban traffic into flowing patterns.
  • The camera remains inside the car for much of the journey, giving the video an unusually intimate perspective for a travel-themed clip.
  • The vehicle is an older convertible, an important part of the video's handmade, road-movie character.
  • "Behind" appeared on Lacquer's album "Overloaded," which was released in 2002.
