Synopsis

A lonely, bedraggled boy crawls from a cardboard box into a dark city, where he glimpses Keane performing behind windows but remains shut out from ordinary life. Seeking shelter in a public bathroom, he covers the walls with fragments of the song's lyrics. When he finally ventures outside, the people he encounters become grotesque and threatening. Retreating once more, he is overwhelmed by white light and enters a strange, dreamlike space where animated images of Keane offer him a moment of comfort and release.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was released in 2004 to accompany "Bedshaped," Keane's third single from *Hopes and Fears*.
  • Its imagery was developed from *Butterfly*, a stop-motion animated short. The music video expanded that material into a narrative connected to the song's themes of isolation, fading memories, and lost relationships.
  • The production combines hand-drawn pen-and-ink illustration, cardboard cut-out animation, stop-frame work, and effects designed to resemble graffiti appearing in real space.
  • Artist David Lupton contributed the hand-drawn material used near the video's conclusion. He completed roughly 800 images in just over a week, working under a tight deadline.
  • The lyrics swirling around Tim Rice-Oxley's piano were added as a visual interaction between the words and the band rather than being presented as conventional on-screen captions.
  • Digital post-production was carried out by Glassworks, a Soho, London effects company. Its work helped combine the animated band imagery, the central character, and the closing drawings into a single composition.
  • The video was included on the enhanced CD single and on DVD editions connected with *Hopes and Fears*, helping it remain one of Keane's most recognizable early visual pieces.

Lyrics

Many's the time I ran with you down
The rainy roads of our old town
Many the lives we lived in each day
And buried altogether
Don't laugh at me
Don't look away

You'll follow me back
With the sun in your eyes
And on your own
Bedshaped
And legs of stone
You'll knock on my door
...
