Synopsis

Set in a stark, empty warehouse, the video follows HIM performing "In Joy and Sorrow" amid shadowy blue-gray lighting and slow, atmospheric imagery. A female figure repeatedly appears as a translucent presence, drifting through the band's performance and giving the visuals a ghostlike, dreamlike quality. The video avoids a conventional narrative, instead matching the song's themes of emotional dependence, isolation, and finding refuge in another person through its restrained pace and melancholic imagery.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed in London on August 23-24, 2001, during the promotional period for HIM's album "Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights."

• The woman appearing throughout the video was South African model Nicolette Groeler.

• Unlike several of HIM's more narrative-driven videos, this clip is primarily a performance piece. Its visual identity comes from the abandoned warehouse setting, muted lighting, and the ghostlike superimpositions of Groeler.

• "In Joy and Sorrow" became the second single from "Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights" and reached No. 2 on the Finnish singles chart.

• A multimedia video version was included on limited editions of the "In Joy and Sorrow" single, helping make the clip a collectible part of HIM's early-2000s releases.

• The song later received a substantially different string arrangement, released on the 2006 compilation "Uneasy Listening Vol. 1."
