Synopsis

In a stark mechanical landscape, small robots perform repetitive tasks while one of them discovers a more aggressive way to survive. Its behavior spreads as the machines consume one another, growing larger and more complex until an enormous metal creature emerges. The cycle appears to end in total destruction, but the mass of machinery transforms into a strange robotic insect that escapes into the air. The video's escalating chain reaction mirrors the track's clipped rhythms and constantly mutating electronic textures.

Factoids & Trivia

• "Putty Boy Strut" was released on September 19, 2012, ahead of Flying Lotus' album "Until the Quiet Comes," which followed on October 2 through Warp Records.

• The animation grew from an idea Cyriak had while studying for an animation degree. He later revisited the concept when the opportunity to make the video appeared.

• Illustrator Sarah Brown collaborated with Cyriak on the visual artwork. The pair had previously worked together on Adam Buxton's "The Counting Song."

• Cyriak said the complete video was finished in only three weeks. He later noted that his subsequent videos generally took around three months to complete.

• The track is the eighth song on "Until the Quiet Comes" and runs for 2 minutes and 53 seconds.

• The video was widely noted for its combination of cute, toy-like machines and grotesque predation, a contrast that became one of the most recognizable features of Cyriak's animation style.
