Wiki

Synopsis

Ghostpoet wanders through the back streets of Camden and around Primrose Hill in a dazed, after-hours haze. As he moves through the city, familiar faces and fragments of everyday life blur with stylized imagery, handmade details and a strange animated creature. The journey reflects the song's portrait of drink, exhaustion and anxious self-reflection: he wants to get home, but his thoughts keep pulling him into a surreal mental maze. The subdued urban setting gives the video a woozy, dreamlike quality.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The official video was released online on October 13, 2010, several months before "Cash and Carry Me Home" became a single on January 24, 2011.
  • The video was made with a deliberately hands-on visual style. Many of its production-design details were created by hand, combining practical props and scenery with computer-generated effects.
  • Its locations include Camden and Primrose Hill in London, grounding the surreal imagery in recognizable urban surroundings rather than an abstract studio world.
  • An animated monster appears among the otherwise ordinary streets and interiors. It functions as a visual counterpart to the song's anxious, hungover state of mind.
  • Early coverage emphasized the contrast between the track's bleak subject matter and the video's flashy graphics, shadowy close-ups and playful visual effects.
  • "Cash and Carry Me Home" was Ghostpoet's first major single and the lead single from his debut album, *Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam*, released on February 7, 2011.
  • The debut album was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize, helping establish the song and its video as early markers of Ghostpoet's breakthrough period.
  • Ghostpoet later explained that he recorded the album himself and made the vocals at home, giving the song's worn, intimate tone a direct connection to his early DIY approach.
