Synopsis
A solitary older man moves through a bleak winter routine, cleaning cigarette butts at work, returning through snow-covered streets, and preparing a modest meal for himself. At home, he sketches a young girl while light from the window moves across his cluttered desk. His isolation gradually becomes more disturbing as he wanders into the night and collapses on snowy railroad tracks. Shot in stark black and white, the video turns the song's themes of loneliness, grief, aging, and a child's loss into a quiet, cinematic portrait of emotional disconnection.
Factoids & Trivia
- The video stars Kenneth Welsh, Devon Welsh's father. He was widely known for playing Windom Earle on the television series "Twin Peaks."
- Devon Welsh was away on tour during the shoot, so he later said that some production details remained unknown to him. He nevertheless described the finished film as deeply moving and cinematic.
- The story was loosely inspired by outsider artist Henry Darger, who worked as a janitor while creating his art in private. The concept also drew on the emotional isolation of working alone and making art outside conventional career paths.
- The production was shot on 35mm film in black and white, reflecting the video's film-noir influence and its emphasis on paranoia and psychological tension.
- Shooting took place immediately after Christmas in temperatures reported to be around -20 degrees. Kenneth Welsh had to crawl in cotton overalls on railroad tracks during the night shoot.
- The video was produced by Somesuch & Co. and Iconoclast. Its credited cinematography was by Bobby Shore.
- "Childhood's End" was released in 2013 as the first video from Majical Cloudz's album "Impersonator."
- Kenneth Welsh's appearance was not his only early contribution to Majical Cloudz. He had previously played flute and trumpet on two recordings made by the group in 2010.
- Devon Welsh described the song as deeply personal and said he initially found it difficult to perform because of the contrast between its intimate lyrics and its forceful kick drum.
