Synopsis

Set against the picturesque landscape of Lake Garda, Italy, the video presents heartbreak in contrasting ways. Claire Richards appears alone inside a villa and in a sun-dappled garden, singing about the aftermath of a failed relationship. Elsewhere, Lee and Faye walk together through woodland while H and Lisa enjoy the countryside as a pair. The group eventually reunites for a choreographed performance in a striking sunflower field, emphasizing the contrast between romantic togetherness and Claire's solitary sorrow.

Factoids & Trivia

• The video was filmed from July 5-7, 1998, around Lake Garda in northern Italy. Locations included the Chiesa di San Bernardino in Sabbionara.

• Much of the shoot was developed on location rather than being planned in detail beforehand. The villa and garden had been selected in advance, while several other scenes were found and filmed during the production.

• Claire's performance on the garden swing was an unplanned moment. The crew noticed the attractive, dappled light moving through the trees and used it to add motion and atmosphere to her vocal scenes.

• The sunflower-field sequence became the video's defining image and was also featured in the artwork for the single.

• Ian "H" Watkins later revealed that the idyllic sunflower location was beside a sewage plant, creating a considerably less romantic reality behind the scenes.

• The original video was shot on 16mm film. The footage was rescanned and remastered in true high definition in June 2022.

• Two different videos were made for the song. The Italian location video accompanied the original version, while a separate production was created for Tony Moran's remix released in the United States.

• "One for Sorrow" became Steps' first UK Top Five single, reaching number two in September 1998. In 2014, Official Charts included it in its Pop Gem Hall of Fame.
