Synopsis

Rakim's return is presented as a biblical-style test of integrity. The rapper encounters a devil-like tempter who offers worldly power and success in exchange for submission, but Rakim refuses to compromise his principles. The allegory is intercut with performance footage that emphasizes his command of the microphone and his renewed connection with hip-hop culture. Rather than chasing fame at any cost, he positions his comeback as a reaffirmation of artistic independence and loyalty to his audience.

Factoids & Trivia

  • "Guess Who's Back" appeared on The 18th Letter, Rakim's first album of new material after the breakup of Eric B. & Rakim and a roughly five-year recording hiatus.
  • The song was produced by DJ Clark Kent. Its production draws on Bob James' "Shamboozie" and uses vocal material from Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise."
  • The video's religious imagery mirrors the song's larger argument: Rakim has returned to the spotlight without surrendering his identity or principles for commercial rewards.
  • The single reached number 32 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1997.
  • Contemporary coverage reported that the video became a number one selection on BET's Rap City.
