Synopsis

Queen perform "Fat Bottomed Girls" onstage in a stripped-down promotional clip filmed at the Dallas Convention Center. Freddie Mercury dominates the footage, prowling across the stage in PVC trousers while Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon appear amid sweeping lights and close-ups of the performance. Rather than following a narrative, the video leans into the band's concert presence and the song's playful, swaggering celebration of curvier women, ending with Mercury's invitation to "get on your bikes and ride."

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed on October 28, 1978, at the Dallas Convention Center, shortly before Queen played the opening concert of the North American leg of the Jazz Tour.
  • Queen filmed the promotional clips for "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Race" around the same period. The two songs were issued together as a double A-side single and refer to one another lyrically.
  • The band deliberately favored a straightforward performance video over an elaborate concept. The stage was equipped with Queen's new lighting system, nicknamed the "Pizza Oven" because of the intense heat it produced.
  • The finished edit did not fully showcase that lighting setup. Brian May later criticized the result, feeling that the video concentrated too heavily on Freddie Mercury while giving the rest of the band and the stage design comparatively little screen time.
  • The clip has circulated through several Queen video compilations, including "Greatest Flix" and "Greatest Video Hits 1." Different releases can vary slightly in their edits and presentation.
  • The song was written by Brian May and first appeared on Queen's 1978 album "Jazz." Its closing bicycle reference provides a deliberate link to Freddie Mercury's "Bicycle Race," which appeared on the other side of the single.

Lyrics

(May)

Are you gonna take me home tonight?
Ah down beside that red fire light
Are you gonna let it all hang out?
Fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round

Hey I was just a skinny lad
Never knew no good from bad
But I knew love before I left my nursery
Left alone with big fat Fanny
She was such a naughty nanny
Heap big woman you made a bad boy out of me
Hey hey!
