Synopsis

Public Enemy perform "Fight the Power" amid a charged Brooklyn street rally staged as the "Young People's March to End Racial Violence." Chuck D leads the crowd while Flavor Flav brings his trademark energy, surrounded by banners, historical portraits, dancers, and members of the Nation of Islam's security detail. Intercut with footage of the 1963 March on Washington, the video turns the song into a public demonstration, linking Black history, community solidarity, and resistance to racial injustice.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video was filmed in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, on April 22, 1989, using streets associated with the production of "Do the Right Thing."
  • It was not the only video made for the song. An earlier version used clips from "Do the Right Thing," while the better-known version centers on the staged street rally.
  • The rally signs and T-shirts reference figures including Paul Robeson, Marcus Garvey, Angela Davis, Frederick Douglass, and Muhammad Ali, placing the song within a wider history of Black activism.
  • Members of the Fruit of Islam, the Nation of Islam's security organization, appear throughout the rally scenes.
  • The song was commissioned for "Do the Right Thing," where it functions as a recurring musical statement and appears prominently in the film's opening sequence and soundtrack.
  • The soundtrack version and the version later issued on Public Enemy's "Fear of a Black Planet" differ in arrangement and length, making the video an important visual companion to the original film-related release.

Lyrics

Shocklee - Sadler - Ridenhour

1989 the number another summer (get down)
Sound of the funky drummer
Music hittin' your heart cause I know you got sould
(Brothers and sisters, hey)
Listen if you're missin' y'all
Swingin' while I'm singin'
Givin' whatcha gettin'
Knowin' what I know
While the Black bands sweatin'
And the rhythm rhymes rollin'
Got to give us what we want
