Synopsis

Set inside a weathered wooden hut, the video follows Chrissie Hynde as she tends to a troubled, seemingly ill man. He arrives carrying an air of anxiety, distracted by a bullet, a map, games of chance, and a broken machine. While he remains withdrawn and barely responsive, Hynde quietly stays close, mending his clothes, helping with repairs, embracing him, and eventually bathing and nursing him. When he is well enough to leave, she watches him go, with an ace card pierced by a knife left behind as an unsettling final image.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video gives the song's promise of loyalty a literal, hands-on form. Hynde is presented less as a conventional romantic lead than as a caretaker who offers practical help without demanding a response.
  • Its visual language is deliberately ambiguous. The man's bullet, map, card game, and knife-pierced ace suggest danger and uncertainty, but the video never explains whether he is a soldier, a fugitive, or simply a distressed stranger.
  • The production was reported in Billboard on May 28, 1994, alongside the video for the preceding Pretenders single "Night in My Veins." Both clips were produced by Deirdre Allen.
  • "I'll Stand by You" was released in 1994 as part of the album Last of the Independents. Chrissie Hynde co-wrote it with Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.
  • Hynde later said she had initially felt embarrassed about setting out to write a hit. She became more comfortable with the song after Noel Gallagher told her he wished he had written it.
  • The song's message of steadfast support later found a prominent charitable context through its use in an NSPCC appeal campaign.

Lyrics

Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
'cause I've seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
