Synopsis

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe appear to dance above the viewer on an invisible glass floor, turning the camera's low angle into the video's central visual trick. Acrobats join them in the surreal overhead space, while balloons drift through the frame. The performance is deliberately abstract rather than narrative-driven, matching the song's autobiographical portrait of an imaginative, restless personality. The unusual perspective makes the Pet Shop Boys seem to float between theatrical spectacle and detached pop performance.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video is built around filming through a transparent surface, creating the illusion that Tennant and Lowe are dancing on glass above the camera.
  • Acrobats were included alongside the duo, adding a circus-like quality to the otherwise restrained performance. Balloons briefly extend that playful, dreamlike atmosphere.
  • The song was released in November 1988 as the second single from *Introspective*. It reached number four on the UK Singles Chart.
  • "Left to My Own Devices" was the first Pet Shop Boys recording to use an orchestra. Richard Niles arranged the orchestral parts, while Trevor Horn and Stephen Lipson produced the track.
  • The visual method had been attempted earlier for the video of Big Pig's "Breakaway." The result was reportedly too dark, and the Pet Shop Boys were unhappy with it, making the later execution especially notable.
  • The song has remained a regular part of the Pet Shop Boys' live repertoire, with later performances sometimes replacing the original orchestral emphasis with synthesizers, percussion, dancers, and inflatable costume elements.
