Synopsis

A red-haired man enters a bar and finds himself surrounded by people whose bodies are invisible, leaving only their clothes and gestures to suggest their presence. He becomes involved with an unseen woman and attracts the hostility of another invisible man. Their confrontation spills into the street, where the protagonist is attacked and apparently shot by an imaginary gun. Neneh Cherry performs the song separately, while the strange narrative turns the track's meditation on women's often-overlooked experiences into an unsettling visual world.

Factoids & Trivia

  • The video stars Andy Serkis, years before he became internationally known for motion-capture performances as Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" and Caesar in the "Planet of the Apes" series.
  • The production was made by Oil Factory, one of the UK's prominent music-video companies during the 1990s. The credited cinematographer was Alexander Melman, and Tobias Zaldua edited the finished video.
  • Its central visual idea is the use of invisible people: clothing, props and physical reactions remain visible while the bodies themselves are absent. That gives the video a deliberately surreal way to suggest people being overlooked or erased.
  • "Woman" was released in 1996 as the lead single from Cherry's album "Man." The song was written by Cherry with Cameron McVey and Jonathan Sharp.
  • Musically and lyrically, the track reworks the perspective of James Brown's 1966 classic "It's a Man's Man's Man's World," turning its premise into a female-centered statement.
  • The single became one of Cherry's major mid-1990s hits, reaching the UK Top 10 as well as the Top 10 in Finland, Hungary, Iceland and Belgium's Walloon region.

Lyrics

You gotta be fortunate
You gotta be lucky now
I was just sitting here
Thinking good and bad
But I'm the kinda woman
That was built to last
They tried erasing me
But they couldn't wipe out my past
To save my child
I'd rather go hungry
I got all of Ethiopia
Inside of me
And my blood flows
